Your water heater stops getting worse — but it doesn't get better. This is where most of the financial case sits. Scale forms where water is heated, so the heater is the primary casualty of hard water and the primary beneficiary of softening. Softening stops further accumulation. What it can't do is reverse what's already bedded into the tank. The planning point: if your heater is already noisy, slow to recover, or well into its life, flushing or replacing it around the same time is the sensible sequence. Otherwise you're protecting a tank that's already largely full of sediment.
You need to use noticeably less soap and detergent. Hard water consumes soap before it lathers. Remove the hardness and the same dose becomes an overdose. The planning point: expect an adjustment period. Dishwasher and laundry detergent quantities usually need reducing, and shampoo and soap go much further. The common complaint in the first week is that everything feels over-sudsed and slippery — that's the absence of soap scum on your skin rather than residue left behind, and reducing the dose settles it.
There's a new drain requirement. Regeneration flushes brine and rinse water to drain, and that discharge needs somewhere to go — with a proper air gap to prevent any possibility of back-siphonage, and capacity for the volume. The planning point: this is frequently what decides where the unit can be installed. It's also the requirement most often cut short in a poor installation, and it's not one to cut short.
Your drinking water changes, and that's a decision to make in advance. Ion exchange trades hardness minerals for sodium, in proportion to how hard the water was. For most water and most people the amount is small, but it's a change. The planning point: if anyone in the household has been advised to limit sodium intake, that's a question for their doctor rather than a webpage. The practical accommodations are potassium chloride in the brine tank at higher running cost, or leaving the kitchen cold tap unsoftened — which is a pipework decision made at installation, not a retrofit.
In older properties, softening can reveal what scale was concealing. Worth knowing, and rarely mentioned. In very old metal pipework, internal scale sometimes sits over corrosion that has already occurred. As softened water gradually reduces that scale, an existing weakness at a joint or a thinned section can become apparent. The planning point: the softener didn't cause it — the corrosion was already there — but it's a reasonable thing to consider in a property with original galvanised pipework or a known history of pinhole leaks. We'd rather raise it beforehand than have it arrive as a surprise.
Outdoor water should be excluded, and that's a plumbing change. Plants gain nothing from softened water, and softening it means spending salt on your lawn. The planning point: outdoor taps and irrigation are generally plumbed upstream of the softener. Deciding this before installation is straightforward; changing it afterward means opening pipework again.
Salt becomes a routine. A bag of salt, carried to the brine tank, several times a year. The planning point: the unit's location needs to be somewhere you can actually reach with a heavy bag — not down a narrow stair or behind stored items — and the brine tank needs checking monthly rather than when the water starts feeling hard again.
And one property-specific consideration: if you're on a septic system rather than sewer, regeneration discharge is worth discussing before installation. Requirements and views vary by jurisdiction and by system, and it's a question worth answering in advance.
