The sewer line gives you nothing. It's buried, it's unmonitored, and for most properties nobody has ever seen the inside of it. It works perfectly right up until the evening it doesn't — and by then the problem is usually years old and the option list has shrunk considerably.
So the sensible thing is to give it a warning system, which takes one visit and produces a recording you keep. A baseline survey tells you what your line is made of, how deep it runs, where it goes, and what condition it's in today. After that, you're managing a known asset instead of waiting for a surprise.

What your line is made of. Clay, cast iron, a period material, or modern plastic — and material determines how it will eventually fail. Clay tends toward root intrusion at joints. Cast iron corrodes internally and narrows. Certain period materials deform rather than block. Knowing which you have tells you what to watch for.
